  “Sanibel Seabreeze”

Sanibel Island, Florida

If this is your first visit to Sanibel, you are in for a treat.  Approximately 50 percent of the island is in conservation land.  The Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge is unmatched in the country today.  Walk through to see the birds and animals, take a ride in one of their safari-like vehicles or bike at your leisure.  Bike and walking paths abound on the Island and even if you haven’t ridden in many years, you will find that it all comes back to you.  Several bike rental agencies are available at reasonable prices.  You will also probably notice the absence of high rises.  Only four stories are allowed by zoning which keeps the small town feel.

Sanibel is famed for its beautiful beaches and its unparalleled shelling.  In the morning you will see beach goers in the "Sanibel stoop" position combing the beach for yet another treasure.  Visit the Bailey Matthews Shell Museum for their comprehensive displays as well as a short video which is so instructive about the life of shells.

Restaurants and shopping are near and extensive. You will find everything from t-shirt and souvenir shops to high-end clothing stores.  There are restaurants to suit every taste.  Your children will love the Island Cow and Cheeburger-Cheeburger as well as Schnappers Hots for the best hot dogs ever.  More formal restaurants are in great supply and you will find Italian, French, and superb seafood eateries.  Explore the Island at your leisure by car, by foot or by bike.  You will be enchanted, I am sure.
